ARCHITECTURE AS AN INSTRUCTION-BASED ART – HARVARD UNIVERSITY EXHIBITION

An exhibition has opened at the Druker Design Gallery at Harvard University titled ‘Architecture as an Instruction-Based Art’. The exhibition is a selection of drawings which are used to coordinate the process of construction, that is, drawings which reflect the nature of architecture as an “instruction-based” art. We selected a drawing from our International Rugby Experience project in Ireland that shows the complex co-ordination and layering of construction from ceiling to roof level. Here each bay of the sculptural ceiling transitions upwards from an expansive oculus aligned with the building axes, twisting through 20 degrees to accommodate eye-shaped north-facing skylights and bespoke solar shades at roof level.

The exhibition has been curated by the Farshid Moussavi and runs until the 15^th October. More information can be found on the Harvard website here.

SULTAN NAZRIN SHAH CENTRE WINS RIBA AWARDS

We are delighted that our project Sultan Nazrin Shah Centre has won one of this year’s RIBA Regional Awards and the RIBA South Building of the Year. The project for Worcester College was won through a competition in 2013 and provides a new auditorium, dance space, seminar rooms, an e-hub and ancillary facilities on a site overlooking the spectacular Worcester College sports field.

The judges commented “To not only preserve but enhance this context would require a building of assured calm and grace. It would need to use materials with a tactile gravitas and be imbued with a timelessness which would make it feel as if it had always been there and need never leave. The Sultan Nazrin Shah Centre does all this and more.”
