Niall McLaughlin was educated in Dublin and received his architectural qualifications from University College Dublin in 1984. He worked for Scott Tallon Walker in Dublin and London between 1984 and 1989. He established his own practice in London in 1990. Niall McLaughlin Architects make high quality modern buildings with a special emphasis on materials and detail. Niall won Young British Architect of the Year in 1998, he was one of the BBC Rising Stars in 2001 and his work represented Britain in a recent US exhibition Gritty Brits at the Carnegie Mellon Museum. His designs have won many awards in the UK, Ireland and the US, including RIAI Best Building in the Landscape and the RIBA Stephen Lawrence Award for the Best Building under £1million. Niall is a visiting professor of architecture at University College London. He was chair of the RIBA Awards Group from 2007 to 2009. He lives in London with his wife Mary, son Diarmaid and daughter Iseult.

Abigail Giddings

Abigail received a BA (Hons) from Nottingham University, and a DipArch from Westminster University. Between 2004-2006 she worked for Tasou Associates and FUSE before joining Niall McLaughlin Architects in 2008.

Since joining the practice she has worked on a care homes project in London, the Masterplan of the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter in Oxford, a Peabody housing project in London and new student accommodation in Oxford. She is currently working on the refurbishment and extension to the Wolfson Building at Somerville College in Oxford.

Alastair Crockett

Alastair graduated from his Part I studies in 2008 with First Class Honours from the University of Bath. He completed his MArch Diploma at University College London in 2010 and gained his RIBA Part III qualifications with Merit at London Metropolitan University in 2012. In 2009 he was a prize winner at the Vizzion Europe Awards ceremony in Brussels. Prior to joining Niall McLaughlin Architects in 2012, he has worked for London based practices HTA Architects, The Architects and Stitch Studio as well as Archipeleco in Bristol.

Bryony Jones

Office Administrator

Bryony studied Art and Design at London’s Guildhall University as well as Architectural Photography at the London College of Communication. Over the last few years she has spent time traveling and working in Australasia, Central America and South East Asia. Bryony joined Niall McLaughlin Architects in 2011, having previously been working as a PR, events and bar manager.

Claire Chawke

Claire studied architecture at University College Dublin and the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, graduating with First Class Honours from University College Dublin in 2011. Between 2008 and 2009 she worked for Icon Architecture, Conservation and Urban Design in Wicklow and on construction projects in New Delhi, India and Morogoro, Tanzania. Upon graduating, she worked for McGarry Ní Éanaigh Architects in Dublin.

Since joining Niall McLaughlin Architects in 2012, Claire has been working on St Cross College, Oxford and Argent King’s Cross, London.

David Hemingway

David graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 1999 with a BA (Hons and continued his education La Sapienza, University of Rome, Leeds Metropolitan University for his PostGrad, and University of Westminster for his RIBA Part III. Between 2001-2007 he worked for WPP Architects, John Thompson and Partners and Neil Choudhury Architects before coming to Niall McLaughlin Architects in 2007. He has been working on projects such as Cranfield University, Centre for Competitive Creative Design, Music and Dramatic Arts Academy in London and a Private House in Goleen Ireland.

Danielle Hodgson

Danielle graduated from the MArch Diploma at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London in 2012, achieving Distinction and Dean’s List Award. Between 2008 and 2011 she worked for Peter Barber Architects, Divercity Architects and Meadowcroft Griffin Architects. Danielle also runs introductory educational workshops with the Bartlett for visiting overseas students, addressing several techniques of making and drawing through identified architectural themes in London. She joined Niall McLaughlin Architects in 2012 and has been working on the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts.

Gillian Brady

Gillian was educated at University College Dublin and Delft University of Technology. She received a BArch (Hons) from UCD in 2010. Since graduating she has worked for ODOS Architects in Dublin and Brady Mallalieu Architects in London. Before graduation she also worked for Sean Harrington Architects in Dublin. Since joining Niall McLaughlin Architects in 2012 she has worked on a private house and T1 Argent Kings Cross Central.

Jane Broadfoot

Practice Manager

Jane holds a BA (Hons) in Humanities (Linguistics, French and Spanish), and has studied accountancy and Criminology . She has spent the majority of her working life involved in language co-ordination and teaching across Europe and within the UK, primarily engaged in prison rehabilitation and eventually became Head of Education in London’s largest men’s gaol, together with co-ordinating European Prison Education initiatives. She was the recipient of a Butler Trust Award in 2000 for her contribution towards the management and welfare of offenders. A swift and eager career change 5 years ago brought her into the divergent world of architecture where she now manages all aspects of the practice.

Joanna Karatzas

Between 2003 and 2005 she worked for Anamorphosis Architects and EMBT, Miralles-Tagliabue Architects. She joined Niall McLaughlin Architects in 2007 and has since worked on projects including Alzheimers Respite Centre in Ireland, T1 Argent Kings Cross Central, ROQ Masterplan, Oxford University, and a private house in Hampshire. Joanna was made an associate in 2013.

Joseph Mackey

Joseph holds a BArch from University College Dublin. Joseph won an Architecture Association Ireland Student Award in 2006 and the Arup Architecture Graduates Medal in 2010. Between 2006 and 2012 he worked with the Renzo Piano Building Workshop in Paris, Tom dePaor in Dublin and Eric Parry Architects in London. Since joining Niall McLaughlin Architects in 2012 he has been working on Argent King’s Cross, London.

Katherine Hegab

Katherine received a BSc Degree from the Bartlett in 2008 and joined UCL’s Dean’s List for achieving Distinction in Design following her MArch Diploma in June 2012.

Katherine worked for Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners between 2008 and 2010 where she worked on projects including a landmark building in Monte Carlo, two transport interchanges in Naples, and the British Museum extension.

In 2007, Katherine was awarded The Henry Herbert Bartlett Travel Scholarship and the UCL Expeditions & Travel Grant to conduct a construction project in Kampala. She has since designed concepts for a community center in Nairobi and a football academy in Lilongwe. In 2010, Katherine worked for UN-HABITAT in Nairobi and represented the UN on a mission to Ethiopia to document the government’s Condominium Housing Programme.

Katherine joined Niall McLaughlin Architects in 2012.

Sarah Carroll

Sarah graduated from her Part I studies at University College Dublin in September 2012 with a First Class Honours degree. She was also awarded a University Scholarship based on her results. Prior to joining Niall McLaughlin Architects in January 2013 she worked for ODOS Architects in Dublin. Currently on a year out from her studies, she plans to pursue her Part II at University College Dublin and study abroad at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2014. Since joining the practice she has worked on a private house in Hampshire.

Sarah-Jane McGee

Sarah-Jane McGee was educated in Dublin and in the Aarhus School of Architecture, Denmark and received a first class honors degree from University College Dublin in 2008. Between 2008 and 2011 she has worked for O’Donnell and Tuomey Architects in Dublin, and for Mario Cucinella Architects in Bologna, Italy. Before graduation she also worked for Paul Keogh Architects in Dublin. Sarah-Jane won the Irish Architectural Graduates Association Gold Medal in 2008, and her thesis project was highly commended in the OPUS Construction Awards in 2008. She joined Niall McLaughlin Architects in 2011. Since joining the practice she has worked on the Masterplan of the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter in Oxford and a private house in London.

Simon Bishop

Simon received a BA (Hons) from the University of Portsmouth, and Dip Arch from the University of Porstmouth, the first year of which was spent in the US at the University of Cincinnati on a scholarship. Between 2001 and 2008 he worked for Nightingale Architects, Anshen and Allen Architects, Architecture PLB and John Pardey Architects. He joined Niall McLaughlin Architects in 2008 and has since worked on a range of projects including Athletes Village in Stratford, Somerville College Student Accommodation in Oxford, and the Outpatients Building at the University of Oxford. He is currently working on a private house in Cotswolds and an infill housing scheme for Camden Council.

Tim Allen-Booth

Tim graduated from Nottingham University in 1997 with a BA (Hons) in Architecture. He worked with Robert Loader Architects and Avanti Architects, and spent two years in Kosovo on various housing schemes. Tim joined Niall McLaughlin Architects in 2006 and has worked on Deal Pier, the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, various projects for Oxford University, and the Bishop Edward King Chapel. Tim was made an associate in 2010.

Tim Burton

Tim studied architecture at London Metropolitan University and the ETH Zürich after a previous degree in Fine Art and Art History at Goldsmith’s College and experience within the film industry. He spent his year out at MRJ Rundell Associates and has also worked for Gramazio and Kohler’s Research Chair for Architecture and Digital Fabrication. Tim joined Niall McLaughlin Architects in 2012. Since joining the practice, he has worked on a Peabody housing project in London and the conversion and refurbishment of a Kensington town house.

Tilo Guenther

Tilo studied architecture at Technische Universität Braunschweig from 1995 – 1997 and at Universität Stuttgart from 1997 – 2001. In 2000 he participated in an exchange programme and studied at HdK Berlin and the University of Kansas, USA. He graduated with his diploma in 2001.

Tilo moved to London in 2002 to work for Eger Architects. He joined Niall McLaughlin Architects in 2006. Since joining the practice, he has worked on a health centre in Dublin, the house at Goleen, Co. Cork, Ireland, the Centre for Contemporary Irish Culture at Kenmare, the Centre for Creative Competitive Design at Cranfield University and is currently working on a Peabody housing project in London and the extension to the Wolfson Building at Somerville College in Oxford. Tilo was made an associate in 2010.
