The
De La Warr Pavilion is one of the most famous modern buildings in Britain.
It is important for the community to feel a sense that they possess
their own public buildings. We entered into a collaborative process with the local people, co-designing
with local school children from 6 schools. The design was developed
through a series of workshops with the pupils. The success of the collaboration
was marked by the number of parents and adults who became involved.
The canopy is fibreglass coated stressed ply skin structure, which sits
on the steel base structure. It moves about on the terrace to accommodate
different performances. The shape of the canopy was based on computer
analysis of sound projection. |
