The
pavilion is designed to have a secure welcoming presence the park. It
is situated in an elevated position overlooking the sports fields where
it can be seen from the surrounding roads. The pavilion will have a
powerful presence when viewed from a distance but will be a refined
lightweight structure when viewed from within or up close. The existing
bandstand is an eyesore, covered with graffiti and extensively vandalised.
It dominates the park in a negative way and creates dark, sheltered,
threatening spaces around it. The new pavilion is located a sufficient
distance from the boundary fence that it does not enclose the space
between it and the fence in an oppressive way like the existing grandstand.
The transparency of the pavilion brings the atmosphere of the surrounding
parkland into the building, the park acting as a green backdrop or being
reflected in the glazing depending on the quality of light and position
of observer. At dusk the pavilion is lit in such a way as to glow softly,
making it a reassuring presence and silhouetting people adjacent to
the building.
It is a positive response to all the site conditions, whether attributes
or constraints. |
